The Nextgen Gallery plugin generates sometimes very long names for some pictures that are taken up into a gallery. For instance, where the original name is 10 characters long, it becomnes a 100 characters long for an image in a gallery. Taking a backup is no longer possible because of the long names.

How to avoid long names for images in a gallery?

@ron5 – This may be a limitation in your back-up application as a 100 character path length is well within standard limits for most any environment.

Have you tried different back-up methods?

I use the BackWPup plugin. A backup with zip compression just gets blocked.
A backup with tar compression results in the error message: “the following names …. are too long to backup.” I have not tried any other plugin yet. Can you recommend me another free one?

@ron5 – We do offer this article related to creating back-ups … https://www.imagely.com/docs/how-do-i-create-a-full-backup-of-my-site/ … it may be of use for you to consider the methods there.

I would also suggest contacting your web hosting service to see why they are blocking methods that use zip compression.

    Thanks!
