List Events by Year

Hi, is there a way to show the events by year similar to what you would do with the “archive” widget for blog posts?
If this needs too much coding and it’s out of the purpose of this support, as a workaround, would be there an URL query I should use to request a list of events for a set year in ascending (or descending) order?
Or maybe I was thinking to simplify the process creating “year” categories, but the problem with this is that when I visit a certain category it displays only the upcoming events of that category (that from an “archive” point of view is useless”) and you need to navigate using the “previous events” button to see past events.
Unfortunately I can’t figure out any other simple way to achieve what I want…
