• Initial problem:

      * Visual editor and links were not working after auto-upgrade on Hostgator.
Was able to finally get visual editor working, but not link button.

      * Yesterday I uploaded 3.5.1 hoping it would fix things. It didn’t. Link button still not working. I uninstalled plug-ins, cleared cache, etc…nothing.

      * I backed up my files. Started to use the WP Codex suggested manual upload, and deleted my wp-admin and wp-instructs. Started uploading files manually. Realized how many there are. Do not have FTP access. Now my website is completely down, and I can’t even access my WP Admin Log-In page. Having to work only in C-Panel.

      I would like to:

    * Re-install WP on my webhost (so all files are there and don’t have to be re-installed one-by-one). Is there an automatic way to just overwrite all the files and not lose my content?

    * Any other suggestions very much appreciated.

  • The link button was removed in WP3.5 — see this thread:

Why can’t you set up FTP – Hostgator certainly supports it.

Thanks, I did see that link, and even had installed the Links Manager plug-in, but that didn’t help either. (I tried this a couple weeks ago).

I have to admit I’m pretty new at WP, and have taught myself everything I know, but still unsure about some things. Not wanting to sign up with FTP (don’t have need for it except now), but will if I must.

Would love to just re-install WP, but then it seems I have to upload my original content anyway…or, is there another way?

    Thanks!

Hmm, well, I’m not sure about the links manager problem. But you really should get FTP set up – it’s not that hard and it’s really useful when you need to do various things — like now :).

Yes, you should follow this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

You might also see if Hostgator can help you get this put back right – from what I’ve heard, they have good customer support.

    Thanks–appreciate your help.
Looks like I need to go figure out FTP, and re-read the link you sent.

Yep – that’s the way to go. And like I said, FTP is really pretty simple and easy to use once you get it set up (that’s not too hard either). Hostgator can help you with it, I’m sure.
