is it possible to limit the characters displayed in the credit/author field (to truncate very long names)?

Not yet, directly. However, you can play with the data filter to do so via coding. Otherwise, I’m adding this as a feature request at https://github.com/michael-cannon/testimonials-widget/issues/52.

Do you have a specific example of before and after for this?

I realized that I’m not sure of which field you want.
