What plugins are you using?
I use Bad Behavior and Cookies ofr Comments, and have … nearly no spam. Also Akismet is a good thing to use π
Which mod rewrite trick are you using for wp-comments and signup?
@ipstenu
I’m using “Bad Behavior” as it helps me to use honeypot’s huge DB via Http:BL API.
This one is for wp-comments-post.php
http://codex.wordpress.org/Combating_Comment_Spam/Denying_Access#Deny_Access_to_No_Referrer_Requests
And done the same thing for wp-signup.php
Going to check your “Cookies for Comments”… sounds juicy π

And Bad Behavior is a great thing to use for that http:bl π (Also thats the htaccess trick I thought you were using, but there are some other less effective ones.)
Are you having spam COMMENT issues or spam SIGNUP issues?
Bad Behavior and Cookies for Comments will check the signup pages as well.
B4 whitelisting of email domains, I was having both the issues (rate was high). Now the rate is very low for SIGNUP but the comment problem is still there. π
And finally disabled comment section for unregistered users. But it’s not a good idea as they (visitors) don’t wanna reg just for a comment.
I hope “Cookies for Comments” will fix this problem… π
Close comments oder than X days network wide.
@andrea_r
I don’t think it’s a good idea. If i set a low time frame, might be problematic for visitors (Specially Googlers) those who want to interact with others regarding that specific page’s topic . And it’s kinda useless if I set a large time frame like 1 year.
But things like 3 months do work. π After running a network for quite a while, the benefits outweigh the spam.
Oky, I’ll try then… As they say, “experience matters“… π
I can honeslty say in over 10 years of bloggin no one ever left an important comment on an older post.
