that usually happens when the plugin runs out of memory during the backup process, and it runs out of memory when the combined size of the files to be backed up is around 1GB (or more),this isn’t an exact number since it depends on the server but let’s just say,for the sake of “argument”,that it is 1GB.
if you have a lot of backups saved in the ‘wp-content’ directory, temporarily move them out of that directory, and then try to create a backup. if that doesn’t work, click on the ‘advanced settings’ link at the bottom of the plugin’s dashboard page and check the ‘alternate zip method’ checkbox, and then try to create a backup. you could also play around with the ‘maximum memory limit’ field.
by the way,if the plugin failed during a backup, there’s a good chance that there are leftover files in the “/uploads/wp-clone/” directory, delete everything except the ‘index.html’ file.

that’s great info. Thank you. Is there a way of determining the size of the file. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head for my problem. I think my site is very big for some reason.

When I try to use this on a particular site, the cycling continues. I’ve modifed the memory limit, chosen the alternate zip method. It never returns with a URL. When I go to the directory i see two entries. So, if I wanted to get the URL, which file would I choose?
you could use either one of those files if both of them are .zip files, but they could be incomplete so do be cautious and only do a restore on an empty WP installation.
the final size of the archive should be the size of the wp-content directory + the size of the database.

why are there two entries that are time-stamped about 2 minutes apart around the same size?
that’s strange.. it’s not possible unless you initiated two separate backups. I’m assuming that you didn’t and since the plugin can’t do scheduled backups, your guess is as good as mine.

Do you generate some type of log which can be inspected for “problems?”
THank you for your help!
not at the moment,I’m afraid.. but I’m pretty sure that the reason for failure was/is the size of the site.
