[Resolved] Just not having a nice time

  • It’s amazing how you mess with one little thing and it can all go tits-up.

Last week I couldn’t upload images to NextGEN, something to do with file permissions. I messed about with them a bit (and messed them up) ,I have now fixed them (with a little help from my webhosts Namesco) but now I have a couple of issues which I just can’t fix. Any help is very much appreciated.

Firstly my ‘add new post’ is screwed, it is missing a load of options (like switch to HTML) and is much narrower than it should be:

And also my toolbar has disappeared from the top and all the options have jumped in to the footer:

Any pointers you give me are massively appreciated.

  • Oh well, time to look at downgrading to 3.4.2

Do you have a pre-upgrade database backup? You cannot run a 3.5 database with 3.4.2 scripts.

Yay, thanks for your responses, I’ve been tearing my hair out. I am currently trying to download all 4gigs of my site just in case.

@esmi – I very stupidly didn’t back up my database – haven’t done it this for 4 years of having the site and just skipped over it. Will never do it again.

If need be I am prepared to do some of the work again but I suppose if I could fix my issues mentioned originally it would save me downgrading.

@beautypirate thanks as well for your response. I will have a look in to this now. Do you know what tool you used?

OK – let’s get this site down to its basics. Try:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems

    AND

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin (use the the latter, if you manage it).

Then re-upload all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Esmi, thanks so much for helping, done the switch to Default Theme, and reset the plugins.
I started copying the entire website earlier (4 gigs) so it’s making me wait for that before I can replace the files. Will check back when I’ve done it.

    Sorry? What is 4 gig?

    Sorry 4gb of data.

I have now deleted everything and replaced it with new 3.5.1 files (other than wp-content).Just waiting on wp-admin to upload – which seems to be taking its time.

The theme is set to default. And the plugins were reset as instructed.

    Fingers crossed.

I’m still concerned about this 4gb of data. That can’t possibly be from your old WordPress site – can it? Did you have a huge Media Library?

Yes, massive. Had all my image galleries from 5 years of walks.

Aha! I wonder if there’s any connection with the sheer amount of images and the problems you’ve been having. Have you checked with your hosts that you’re not exceeding your hostage space or bandwidth allowance?

That’s all good, I use Namesco and have a special package with them where I can pretty much use as much bandwidth as I want. Had one site that was doing 40gb a month at one point. Bowlandwalks averages about 5gb a month.

Fairy ’nuff. Just thought it was worth checking. 🙂

This little problem has made me think on for the future though 🙂

The wp-admin folder has nearly uploaded now – weirdly taken about 20mins for such a small file. I am guessing it won’t be over yet though.

    Ahh, done.

    I’ve got:
“There doesn’t seem to be a wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started.

Need more help? We got it.

You can create a wp-config.php file through a web interface, but this doesn’t work for all server setups. The safest way is to manually create the file.”
