In an effort to understand things better, I’m wondering why a javascript audio-player which works ok in my own custom theme doesn’t even display in TwentySixteen.

I can’t yet provide a link… because this is a test install, and I’m experimenting with different players and themes to try to understand more about the issue.

I recommend you use chrome’s dev tools to debug this locally https://developer.chrome.com/devtools/docs/javascript-debugging
