Has the menu slowness issue been fixed in the newer versions of WordPress?

Not to my knowledge. The core trac ticket has not been resolved https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/25698

I had heard it was supposed to be fixed in 3.9 .

Hey Mark,

If you have any source on that I’d be eager to see it. Once the core update has been made, I’ll release an update to the plugin with a notice that it should be deactivated on WP3.9+ 🙂
