I have been told that wordpress is only good for a blog
Sorry but that’s just rubbish! WordPress can pretty much be whatever you want it to be. I’ve used it on umpteeen client sites as a basic cms (no blog).
Is it easy to theme etc. I read on the internet and got told in forums that it was just a blog but i would like to give it a try.

Well, there’s about 800 free theme for you to choose from at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ Switching themes is as easy as uploading a new theme, previewing it (to ensure that it works OK) and then activating it – all 1-click operations on most WordPress sites.
When using WP for a site (as opposed to a blog), you need to:
– publish Pages rather than Posts
– configure WP to use a static front page
– choose a good custom permalink structure – one of the default presets is probably the best option.
– install an RSS Pages plugin (WP only publishes Posts in the RSS feed by default)
I think that about covers it.
Maybe a few years ago WordPress was basically just a blog, but over a very short space of time it has evolved into a very powerful general purpose CMS.
Sure, you can still use it as just a blog but there are many, many more uses.
We make most of our sites using xara web and were looking to have a cms system. How easy is it to transfer the design into wordpress or are there any demo’s etc.

I’d browse through all the free themes and see what designs you like, or is the closest to what you want then start reading up on WP theming.

I used Joomla for quite a while before I settled on WordPress as I found it a really great platform to develop against. I just did not get on with Joomla, found everything quite hard to do by comparison.
However that was around 3yrs ago now, things may have changed quite a bit now.

An RSS Pages plugin publishes your Pages on a feed. By default, WP only publishes Posts in the RSS feed.)

On a non-blog site, you usually publish Pages. Since RSS offers a method of propagating your site’s content further and/or gathering a readership, it’s worth installing an RSS Pages plugin.
