Is a multi column categories list possible?

I am working on making a theme for a friends site and he wants his categories list to be displayed horizontally in about eight columns. His site has about 90 total categories. I been working on the problem for about three days and I found post on how to hack it into two categories. i.e. http://tugbucket.net/wordpress/two-column-category-lists-in-wordpress/ and http://www.blogohblog.com/10-wordpress-hacks-to-make-your-life-even-easier/ but I have not figured out a way to modify the code to allow me to break it into eight columns. Has anyone done this and/or can point me into the right direction to be able to do this.
