    Dear Sir/Madam,

Until yesterday the website aveth.ethz.ch was working perfectly.
This morning a security warning popped up whenever accessing the site (see attached).
The security warning could be bypassed using Advanced  Accept the Risk and Continue.
While trying to deal with this issue, I updated all existing plugins then since the issue was not resolved I installed a new plugin called Wordfence.
I followed this plugin’s instructions but instead of resolving the issue the entire website is down and I see instead the attached internal server error.
Any advice or help you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @ledouxc, thanks for reaching out to us.

There is a chance that your site was compromized prior to the installation of Wordfence from the sounds of a random security warning appearing on your site pages. I am not confirming this is a malware or breach situation, because more investigation would be needed, but it just sounds suspicious.

If this isn’t the case, websites can be blanked or come back with “Internal Server Error” messages if something is misconfigured at the site or hosts’ end and are basically blocking Wordfence from running. As Wordfence is an endpoint firewall, when optimized, the WAF runs before site pages are served to visitors. Something failing at this stage such as a blocked communication from Wordfence is a possibility.

If our IPs need to be allowed at your end, they are here for your convenience: https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/#servers-and-ip-range

If you are unable to gain access to your site at all, look inside the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and rename the wordfence directory to wordfence.bak using your file manager or FTP access to your site.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
