Internal Server Error 500 caused by old theme?

    I am using a child theme for twentytwelve. Seemed fine when I uploaded it but now I get an Internal Server Error 500. The error log says:

    [04-Mar-2013 10:06:37 UTC] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘, expecting ‘)’ in /home/annmari1/public_html/mundanestudies.org/here/wp-content/themes/debut/content.php on line 55

    Debut was the original theme I used, before switching to twentytwelve and then the child theme. I tried deleting the debut folder from themes and the .htaccess folder from the root directory.

    Previous questions about this have VERY diverse responses.

    Okay, that was an old error in the log. The real error log was giving lots of out of memory errors. The best advice I’ve found for dealing with the problem is here: WPbeginner: how to fix the internal server error . It didn’t resolve my problem but it gave me a structured way to approach it. Waiting for a response from my hosting service now.

    Revert to Twenty Twelve theme and see if the error message goes away.

    Thanks! My hosting co won’t let me increase the memory. Have already tried getting rid of child theme, deleting .htaccess, manually turning off plugins and reinstalling WP core files. Right now I’m trying remain calm while I wait for their support lines to open back up.

    Did you try switching to Twenty Twelve theme to see if the error is theme-specific?

    In the end I did a complete reinstall and still got the error. I contacted my hosting provider and they seem to have fixed it. I’m very relieved….thanks again.
