• Each time that I’ve installed WP in the past, I get stuck on this issue (and can’t seem to recall how I resolved it).

Rechecked all of the fundamentals, but as I attempt to execute \wp-admin\install.php I get Page Cannot Display (404)error.

What are the most common explanations for this?

  • Why do you have \ – instead of / ?
it should be in your browser’s address bar:
    example.com/wp-admin/install.php

Sorry, I have been using a forward slash /. My example was incorrect.

If it cannot be displayed – it is not there where you say it is.

When I substitute /wp-admin/install.php with /wp-admin/readme.html (which I copy into that subdirectory)I am able to display this file.

And did you check if the install file is uploaded there?

But in the standard WordPress distribution there is no /wp-admin/readme.html file.

Suggestion: delete your wordpress files and folder and reupload.

Yes…the install.php file is present in the /wp-admin directory! So, if I can display other files in the same directory, my URL addressing doesn’t seem to be the issue.

Are there any other reasons why I would receive this error message, if in reality, the install.php is there?

O.K. At the risk of personal embarrassment (once we find the easy explanation/fix for this) versus days of agonizing frustration, I have:

Uploaded new WP files and folder (three times), and continue to get Page Cannot Display error when I attempt /wp-admin/install.php. The /install.php file is present and when I copy the readme.html file into this directory, it displays.

    Stuck!
