• Hello. I have been given a task by one of my family members to update their outdated website. I got their hosting information, logged into Bluehost to check out their files and all that. I’m new to WordPress, I do know about coding but not so much about websites, mostly java and such. Anyways my question is, I assume the current website is not built via WordPress since I downloaded the backup version and went through the code in visual studio code. I have several questions, so bear with me.

This is the current files in the file manager of the website https://imgur.com/aZWLvBf

    1. Since this website is already built and such, how do I transfer this over to WordPress? I see in the Bluehost site that there is install WordPress but I did not touch it as of right now. How would I go about installing WordPress and migrating the current website to a WordPress website?

    2. Is there a way to build the WordPress theme on the side without it going live? And once I am done with the theme, publish it and replace the existing website? The existing website does not have to look the same as the WordPress theme.

I just want to install WordPress onto the website but not break or mess up the site and build a new website theme on WordPress on the side without making it live till I am ready to publish it.

  • Hello, nathan12, & welcome.

What I generally do in a situation like this is to install WordPress to a separate folder on the site. You didn’t provide a link, which actually in this case would’ve helped, at least a little. Generally hosting providers give clients at least 1 script installer by means of which they can install scripts like WordPress. I’ve worked w/a client or 2 on Bluehost, but I really can’t recall offhand which 1click installers they provide. If available, I like Softaculous, simply because I find their scripts to be up-to-date, which I’ve not always found on other similar installers.

These installers give you the choice of installing either to a separate folder or to the web root, the latter is done by not filling in a directory name. That will, however, overwrite the existing site, so please fill in a directory name when the installer asks for 1.

Your next task will be to choose a theme. You can use 1 of the provided default themes, or, conversely, go to http://www.wordpress.org/themes , where you can search on a staggering number of keywords to find themes that match your preferences.

Once ready to make the site go live, please consult the following article:

    Giving WordPress Its Own Directory

Because I’m not sure how this site is built–I have a severe visual impairment & the posted images, unfortunately, were not readable for me–it’s hard for me to instruct you how to import the site’s content. If you’d like to provide a link, I may be able to assist you w/that as well.

Good luck w/this. The learning curve can feel a bit steep at first, but it’s not like you have no technical background whatever, & those folks do learn this stuff.

    It should be, Nathan12, yes.

I am having a new issue as of right now.

I am getting this error whenever I try to install wordpress into the domain.

How would I go about fixing this?

Hello, Nathan12. You would need to go to your hosting provider’s control panel & see if they’ll allow you to change the version of PHP. Otherwise, you’ll need to contact them & ask if they’ll do it for you.

Please check the code in the current website before you update PHP! Since you said the current website was outdated, updating PHP could break it.

Sorry for the late reply, I was asleep. This is what I see on the hosting site, I went under php config. http://prntscr.com/p3ve6r

What code do I update or check to see if it’s compatible with whatever PHP WordPress is asking for? Would just ticking PHP 5.6 be enough or would it break the site?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m just really having difficulty figuring out exactly what your site is running, Nathan12. It actually seems like there might be a combination of technologies, ie, your file manager does show a WordPress folder, the packing portion shows a Revslider plugin, which tends to be associated w/WordPress, but, if it is a WordPress install, it’s very nonstandard. The homepage seems to be standard HTML.

I am also having considerable difficulties w/the screenshots provided, unfortunately.

You do have an option called “my installs”. Is anything there, perchance? That might help.

Yeah I’m not sure about the code, as I did not build this website ground up, I just took over it last week. Yes I do have a my installs it just takes me to a mokomarketplace where I can see WordPress installation and then it takes me back to the WordPress page where I enter the directory and it gives me the PHP error.

I might just update the code via HTML. I do have the choice to update my PHP via cpanel through bluehost but I do not want to the break the site and I have no clue where I would even start in the code about updating PHP.

Nathan12, prior to updating PHP, please back up everything. Don’t forget to go to PhpMyAdmin in your CPanel & back up any databases that may be associated w/your site. Let us know, please, if you’re uncertain how to do that.

I frankly would actually be willing to bet this site has no WordPress components, & if you knew how bad I hate losing money, you’d know I don’t say that lightly. I don’t see that this site uses PHP at all, & I therefore think that updating PHP will have no effect. However, you know what? I’ve been wrong before, & I will be again. But let me repeat–please back up everything, including files & any associated databases, prior to upgrading your PHP.

I read your articles. It is full of information and amazing. I share it to my friends.I always follow you

Sorry for the late replies. Storm here. I have backed everything in publichtml in file manager and the database in phpadmin. When I extacted the zip file of publichtml, and just did a little search on “php”

    http://prntscr.com/p4jrxg

This is what I get back when I search in the publichtml “php”. Does this help figure out if the website has php or not?

If I were to update the php, should I update to 5.6 or 7.x?
