installing theme

I’m new is using WordPress
and I don’t have so much web designing Experience .

I’m trying to install a WordPress Theme , I Compress it and make a .zip file but as far as I upload the Theme I get an error which says :

The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.
Theme install failed.
