So I have had some issues when duplicating WordPress to my local XAMPP. Fortunately I was able to solve them.

    First issue: No database connection
Solution: Change % to localhost in phpmyadmin

Second issue: Logging in referred me too my live website
Solution: Adding code to the config to force wordpress to rediscover the url

Latest issue: I am unable to regenerate thumbnails on my duplicate site.

    Error:
    [original] 1280 x 720: ERROR: Could not find /home/wxxxxx/domains/xxxx.com/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/tropico5-review-featured.jpg

Obviously the path is now somewhere totally different (C:/XAMPP/htdocs/gp1) but I have not figured out where in WordPress I would change this.

    Any suggestions?

  • Maybe changing guid in wp_posts table in the database might help.

    First:
    – the default XAMPP database user name is root with NO password (leave it empty)

    Second:
    – edit the siteurl and home fields in the wp_options table of your local wordpress database to reflect it’s new location; for example, if you have WP in a folder named wordpress within XAMPP’s htdocs, then this is the value you enter:

    http://localhost/wordpress

    Third:
    – log in to the WP dashboard and install and run this plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/
    – go to Settings > Permalinks and just re-save

Now try to re-gen the thumbnails 🙂

    Thanks for the info.

    Will try that plugin:).

(ps: I did set a password using the “security” setup from XAMPP).

Unfortunately updating the url did not fix the image file location issue. I guess the general principle was right but the wrong stuff was targetted…

My images still think they are at /home/wxxx/domains/ instead of /htdocs/gptest/

Update: Thanks to the Simple Image Sizes I found a string

Store uploads in this folder: WRONG URL
    Default is wp-content/uploads

However my host is linux and I am using windows 7 + XAMPP so I am unsure what the path should look like.

Ok I have solved it by doing some steps.

step1: Another clean install of wordpress. This time INSTALL the theme.
step2: verify the new theme that you can upload and regenerate thumbnails
step3: search in phpmyadmin for “xampp”
    step4: You found the path!

    In my case C:\xampp\htdocs\gp2/wp-content/uploads

Step5: Install a new wordpress, copy over your wp-content folder, drop sql and import your sql site.
step6: Go to media>settings and adjust the path to the one found at step 4.

    Phew…
