I am trying to install the WordPress Importer (from Tools, Import, last item). Clicking on Install Now yields the error message ‘Installation failed: Could not create directory.’ after a few seconds. I have checked that all the directories in the WP directory are owned by the web server user (www) and the permissions look OK. The error message doesn’t say which directory could not be created or why.

Any suggestions about what could be wrong, or how I can debug this?

owned by the web server user (www)

How are you hosting your WordPress site?

The site is hosted on our own server (which happens to be running Mac OS X Sierra, although I doubt that this is relevant).

Make sure the directories are owned by the same user under which PHP is running and secured 755.

Here’s a display of the permissions from root down to the directory which the plugin installer has created. (To recap, the error banner on the WP Tools page says Installation failed: Could not create directory. I get exactly the same message if I try to install via the Plugins page). _www is the user that the web server (Apache2.2.4) and PHP is running under.

    Try

    sudo chown -R _www:_www /Volumes/Documents/VirtualSites/p2pvalue

Thanks for the suggestion. In fact I had previously done that, but to be sure I repeated it. The error persists, and as the following shows, it didn’t make any difference to the permissions.

I have no clue about server, but might your system by any chance run any specials for downloaded files, say virus scans, etc.?

    micrology

    (@micrology)

No, it is a vanilla Mac OS X El Capitan OS, with no virus scanning or other ‘specials’ such as that.

I’m out of MacOS ideas. You might try using FlyWheel local to get your site up and running: https://local.getflywheel.com/

Also another potential solution for Mac could be using Mac Bitnami installers.

    Please check:
