• Installation failed after it failed to import something like blue.css, the site has now disappeared as has the control panel, so I can’t get in to reattempt it. Can anyone advise on how to fix without losing everything?

    Cheers

    Rob

I clicked the “update” button in the control panel, it downloaded the update, began extracting it, said it “failed to copy [big string of words]” and then “installation failed”

Now I can’t access the control panel and the site is down.

    Try:
    – switching to the default theme automatically by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    – Try MANUALLY re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!

BTW, if you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. It’s a great safety net.
