• Hey guys!

I’ve downloaded a few themes I’d like to try out on my blog. I’ve made sure they’re compatible with my WordPress version, I’ve unzipped the files and moved them to the “theme” folder.

But still they don’t show up in my “Available Themes”. So I’d want to try installing or uploading themes straight from my WordPress control panel, but I don’t have the “Install Themes” option and so I can’t choose to upload themes either.

I know this isn’t possible for wordpress.com users, but my blog is self-hosted from wordpress.org.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Am I just stupid?

  • Some possible reasons:

your hosts prevent FTP access (not likely based on your statement of unzipping files and placing them in your theme directory on the server)

You have a security plugin enabled which prevents modifications to the theme directory

You didn’t refresh your browser after uploading the themes so it seemed like WordPress wasn’t aware of the new themes.

Your user account doesn’t have permissions to install themes (unlikely but might as well throw it out there).

Anyway, just some ideas to test out and see if they might be the reason behind why you can’t see or enable the themes.
