Install for me?

    I’m so lost! I’ve been trying to install wordpress for days, and I’m just not getting anywhere with it! I got as far as trying to setup the configuration file, but it won’t recognise my details. I hadn’t set up the wp-config.php file so I tried that and still nothing! I’m only sixteen, so I don’t really know very much about all this stuff. My website is hosted by BT, I should’ve got one of the recommended ones but I only found out that I could do this after I’d set up my host. Could someone please help me, I’d be really grateful if someone would offer to install it for, if that’s possible?

    Let me try and give you a hand.
    I’ll lead you through the process, step-by-step.
    Do one step at a time.
    Move on to the next step only when the previous one was succesful.

    All steps have numbers, so you can tell us where you are, what went OK, and where you need more explanation. NEVER share passwords etc. on our forum / over the internet

    I’ll start right at the beginning, not knowing exactly which steps you’ve done and completed succesfully. When you find an instruction that’s ‘done’, just move to the next…

    Preparations [yes / no / don’t know / what do you mean]

    All these things should be in the letters / mails and documentation sent by your webhost

    1. Who is the webhost? BT?
    2. Did they confirm the activation of your webhosting service?
    3. Did they send you the data required to set up your site?
    • your ‘domainname’ e.g: http://www.carysl.co.uk
    • username and password to access your domain / site through a webbrowser?
    • username, password and FTP-address of the server your site is hosted on
    • did you / the webhost already create a ‘mysql-database’ and databasename and password

      • If not use the webaccess provided by the webhost to access your site and create a database and user. Make sure you write down and keep secure these data!

    If all of the above is done / in place, start the installation

    • host: server20.bt.co.uk
    • port: [leave blank]
    • protocol:FTP-File Transfer Protocol
    • Encription: use normal FTP
    • Login type: normal
    • User: [in the mail / docs the webhost sent]
    • Password: [in the mail / docs the webhost sent]
    • press çonnect-button

    If the above went well, you are connected to the site.
    In the LEFT half of the screen, your desktop PC is shown.
    In the RIGHThalf of the screen sits the WEBSITE

    Install WP-files

    • Browser:download a fresh copy of the WP-files and store them on your PC
    • UNZIP the WP-files; In win-explorer: right-click and unpack / unzip
    • FTP:
    • FTP:PC-side: Open the folder with the unzipped WP-files
    • FTP-Web’side’:go to the folder ‘httpdocs’
    • FTP:PC-side:select all WP-files >> right-click >> upload

    All WP-files will be uploaded to your site; This may take a while, depending on the speed of your internet-connection. Wait patiently.

    • Check if upload completed without errors: middle tab at the bottom of the ftp-screen

      First contact through your BROWSER

    • browser:open your website, by typing your domainname
      e.g. http://www.carysl.co.uk

      • WP will start a screen to start the famous 5-minute install

      There doesn't seem to be a wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started.
Press: "Create a Configuration File"
    • Press: “Create a Configuration File”

      • A screen outlines the things needed to get things working. These things you already collected in the previous steps, so let’s get all things in place…

    • Press:Lets go!”

    • Databasename: [see document / mail by webhost or enter the databasename you created yourself e.g. ‘m1_6ca930’
    • Username: e.g. administrator
      [see document / mail by webhost or enter the DATABASE-username you created yourself ]
    • Password: e.g. GBWkR3wtjr5rYeWkR3wtjr
      [see document / mail by webhost or enter the DATABASE-password you created yourself ]
    • database Host:see document / mail by webhost e.g. server3.bt.co.uk
    • Table Prefix: e.g. carys_ {!!please leave the underscore at the end!!
    • submit
    • A new screen opens >> press ‘install’

    • Give a site title e.g. ‘finally a working site’
    • Username: [a username for your SITE; e.g. ‘Carys’
    • create and repeat a DIFFICULT password and write it down
    • enter a valid e-mailaddress; a confirmation of the install will be sent
    • tick / untick the Allow search engines to index this site. option
    • click ‘install wordpress’

      • You should now have a working site.

      Where from here?

      e.g.

    • find a theme for your new site, so it gets the look and feel you are looking for. There are lots and lots of free themes to choose from. They give a solid start to running your site
