Insert Media Hack

I’ve been looking for a plugin that will enable the user to sort his media files by category when using the insert media function in the edit post/page.

I have not found a plugin to do it myself. I can enable categories to be displayed and searchable in the actual media library, but not the media insert section. I wanted to know how feasible it would be to do add this myself.
