Have you tried:
– deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
– switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
– re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.
Thank you for your reply. I have done all of the things listed except switching the theme because I fear losing the custom theme that I use. Is there any danger of that?
I just tried installing Twenty Eleven and it does not seem to be logging in using my ftp info (which is what happens when I try to update plug-ins as well).
Upload the theme’s folder to wp-content/themes using FTP.
I activated twenty eleven theme and still cannot insert hyperlinks.
Have you tried using another web browser? Another computer?
Yes. Firefox and Chrome. Two different macs.
homegrown.org
I have reactivated my custom theme.

Deactivate all plugins & switch to the Twenty Eleven theme, please.
Now can you create a new post and try to add a single link to it?
Now I’m getting the old problem before I deactivated all plug-ins. I add text, click the chain to add a link, enter a url and I get:
