Insert event within custom page

I’m working with Events Manager and trying to include my event into a custom page. I’ve created a page template using the standard “if have posts” syntax as well as WP_Query referencing a specific category (which is how I normally create custom pages). I’ve tried entering an [event] shortcode, but so far have had no success.

Can someone point me to documentation that covers this scenario?
