Hi, When I login there is a banner that says to up grade to 2.7.1 which is good news. My question is what good is downloading the files to my computer? My web page is hosted on a WordPress server. I can’t get there from here. What am I missing? Thanks, Ralph

Well, presumably you’d unpack them on your computer and then upload them to your server. See Upgrading_WordPress.

This could potentially be your last “manual” upgrade to ever worry about. Automated upgrading is built-in to WordPress 2.7+

Well I guess I just don’t understand WordPress. I get the impression that it is an application to edit webpages. It runs on someone’s server. I don’t have a server. I have a webpage on a server that has WordPress installed on it for use by the webpage owner (Me). The version that I am using is 2.5 and it keeps bugging me to upgrade but who ever wrote up the instructions keeps bouncing back and forth between installing and upgrading the server and what I can use. It is pretty confusing. I don’t imagine that I would have that level of access to the server anyway. Please let me know what my options are and where I can get the information. Thanks, Ralph

See if this helps shed some light on the issue. If not, then you would just need to get someone to do it for you. Once you get upgraded to the latest version, then in the future when you get those notices you will have a ling to cick on and the upgrade will be done automatically for you.

Frightens the life out of me having to load to computer and then try and install. Why can’t the upgrade be linked to the site that is running the application. Surely that would be easier?

I don’t know how to back up a website “Just Incase” Presumably it has to be done otherwise you are not getting the full benefit of the SEO application. I cannot see the point of going to another SEO site to get an automatic install when you have to pay another fee.

Come on guys can’t you make this simpler? Updates are usually automatic anyway. I’m a total greenhorn and do not understand any of the technical talk. Also suffering from short term memory loss does not help (this is due to medication) I know stop the meds 🙂

If you don’t understand any of this, why are you hosting your own blog? You either need to learn how to do this kind of stuff or use wordpress.com. They take care of upgrading for you.

The way I understand this is that after you get to WP 2.7 the updates are mostly automatic. The problem is getting that far. I looked at the video recommended by Figero and it is using CPanel which I don’t have. I did download an FTP program but I can’t log into my WP Site on port 21 with my credentials. I don’t blame WP as FTP port are vunerable but there should be a work around.

I really don’t have time to be a code jock, I am trying to make some money on the internet but they are making me jump over a lot of hurdles. I guess it is the price you have to pay. If I can pay someone a reasonable fee to do this I will. Thanks for the advice.

Leave a way for someone to contact you and/or post to the wp pro mailing list…you are sure to have someone contact you if you post there:

And where did you start your career on the internet or hosting? I am merely making a point that it is to complicated for a beginner to take in and adapt to all at once.

    Why are you hosting?

Probably for the same reason as many of us, you buy into something hoping to make a few bucks in these challenging times and suddenly you are confronted with all this material that you have to learn and adjust; as well as chucking out old school methods that came from an era of no computers and hands on.

The scarry part is if you make a mistake it is not laid out there in front of you to correct until its to late and the published article is nothing like it should be. It has just taken me four hours to correct an HTML mistake which happened in a split second. I don’t know HTML, but boy I’m learning fast.

Another thing I have found out and this will be a laugh for you, when editing a web page, don’t hit google spell check as I inadvertaintly did. It turns all your spelling mistakes red and they stay that way. Now I have to figure how to change that. Fortunately the mistake is only a capital letter and all through the page the same word Internet is now red Hahahahahahaha

Well I found the email with my login info for CPanel and was able to get into it. Now I can go back and look at the video and take notes. Your right about learning new stuff. I hope that it isn’t true what they say about old dogs and new tricks.

I decided there is too much risk to my doing the upgrade. Too steep a learning curve, not enough time to learn it. My email is ralphpars@gmail.com Thanks, Ralph
