Index size in database

    I have a site that currently has about 15,000 posts indexed. Relevanssi is using about 550MB of my database. I understand that it needs room for it’s index.

    The problem is that my host has a hard limit of 1GB MySQL databases. And my site is now at 970MB even after optimisation work.

    I asked my web host about raising our 1GB limit. They will not do that. They only offered an expensive cloud hosting option.

    I was wondering if it could be possible to connect Relevanssi to a different MYSQL database just for Relevanssi? I am allowed unlimited 1 GB databases with my host. So we could keep all the WordPress stuff on the original db, and use a new one for the Relevanssi plugin, giving us enough room to last us another few years.

    I’ve seen your warnings about the amount of storage required to run Relevanssi, so this must be an issue for others as well. Does this idea have any milage?

    I’m sorry, but a site that big and an 1 GB database is simply an impossible combination for Relevanssi use.

    Relevanssi is built heavily leaning on WordPress database infrastructure, and thus cannot host the database elsewhere.

    My main recommendation would be to choose another host that is more generous with the database size. In my experience, there are plenty of good hosting providers with no such strict limits for the database size.

    If you can’t switch hosting and still want a strong search, your best option is to use something that is externally hosted; something like ElasticSearch, Algolia or other hosted search services. With those kinds of search providers, your personal database space is not required.
