Incorrect (old) version number in wordpress/wp-includes/version.php

    I discovered that the $wp_version variable in version.php is set to ‘2.5’. I’m actually running 3.71, and haven’t been on 2.5 since it was current.

    What would cause this to not get updated, and does it even matter? (I only found this when I was grep’ing for some related text.)

    One or more bad 1-click updates?

    Yes. Try:
    – switching to the default theme.
    – deactivating all plugins.
    – backing up your database.
    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.
    – running an upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
