Inconsistence Subpages number and offset?

Hello,
I am a little confused here why does the value of the tag [number] and [offset] changed from time to time.
Initially, I was able to display 20 pages in a single column with [subpages number=”45″] and on the second column I had to set the offset the same as the number like this [subpages offset=”45″ number=”20″] to display another 20 pages. After that I had to add 20 to offset for every new column.
And that’s not the problem by the way. The problem is that I was able to display 20 pages when I set the [number] and [offset] as 32 yesterday but today I noticed it only display 10 pages on the first tag so I had to change the value to 45…
Am I doing something wrong?
