Importing Posts
-
Hi.
I’m trying to import my posts from my wordpress.com and I keep getting this error when I try and upload my exported file.
Sorry, there has been an error.
Unable to create directory /home/a2638275/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2008/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

No need for screen shots.
Just install a decent FTP client, as it is suggested in the 1st section of that tutorial, and do what it says.000webhost is decent webhost
I’m sorry, I’m just new to this. I’ve never had to do this, and I’ve followed every step…
What does your host have to do with whether a FTP client is “decent” or not?? I never mentioned your host because it is irrelevant.
Maybe it’s cause I have no idea what in the world I’m doing :S Idk what a FTP is. I guess I’m looking in the wrong spot.
The real problem is NOT that you don’t know what a FTP client/software is. The big problem – as always – is in waiting to be spoon-fed.
If you went to that Codex article I linked to above – you could find links to other articles explaining what FTP is and what it does, how it works etc.Do your homework! The newer you are the more is expected that you carefully read every line in the suggested documentation and that you click on links for further readings.
On the other hand, if you don’t want to learn all that stuff that is required to be able to manage your website – hire somebody.
Alright, I figured out what my problem was. There are 2 file managers, and I was using the second one, but when I used the first one, I found out what you guys were talking about. Now, I changed the numeric value for the chmod from 666 to 777, but when I tried to import those posts, it still didn’t work. Then I tried to just upload my file into the wp-content folder, but it wouldn’t upload (Because it’s too big). Any other suggestions? I did exactly as codex said.
Is it possible that my file is so big it can’t be uploaded?
My problem is of the same kind but a bit different.
I want to import my over 7,000 WP.com blog posts into my WP.org blog. which is in the server where I have my domain in.
When exporting form WP.com I got a 34.2 XML file. But when importing into WP.com my host MySQL function stop importation after 90 seconds, which is time enough to import 2,786 post only, out of the total of 7,272.
Since I found the resulting incomplete file in public_html / blogwp / wp-content / uploads / 2008 /, I decided to use FTP and uploaded that XML file into that exact place, but nothing happens in my blog: the material uploaded (categories and posts) don’t show up at all.
Any solution?
This can help someone.
The problem I asked help for befores was due to the the 90 seconds that host MySQL query last. No time enough for me to upload the 34.2 MB files.
So, via FTP I put that file in my domain and my host tech people due the rest, and thousands of posts show up in my blog finally. There are a lot of duplications and a lot of missings, but this is something I can fix manually.
My problem now is that the “Previous entries” and “Following entries” buttons that used to be at the end of the page have disappeared.
Any idea about that?
Hello, Guys! I am Kolyo Kolev from Bulgaria!!! I have found a solution for the problem! Now… There are the “public_html” directory, after that the “Wp-Content” directory, the “uploads” directory, after which the directory, where is written the year, means directory “2009”, after which the month… now it’s may, so now the directory is “05”!
Means… public_html > WP-Content > uploads > 2009 > 05
We are starting the 777 directory permission from “WP-Content” and we have to set 777 permissions to all folders down the line!!! Got it???
You set permission 777 to “uploads”, “2009” and “05”.
However, before that you should manually create these directories, because they are not coming with the wordpress installation and because the import function cannot install them on 000webhost.com
You give them the 777 permission after you’ve created them in the following order that I’ve shown above! At first their permissions are 755, that’s why the import can’t happen!
I’ve just had the same problem and found the solution! I successfully imported my wordpress!!! You can check it now at http://stress.comoj.com
Everything is there… Even the tags! 😉
Hope to have helped!
