Implement link timeout

    In the sidebar I have a link to a server which implements more information on my page. Sometimes this server is very slow or just down. In this case my WordPress page loads also very slowly or times out.

    How can I implement this link with a timeout – let’s say after 3 seconds when there is no answer from the server then WordPress does not wait any longer for it and loads the page without this text.

    How to do?
