This looks like it is due to tall narrow images being cropped to a square.

If the images need to be square due to contraints of the theme, try using the Simple Matted Thumbnails plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-matted-thumbnails/ This should enable you to use images that are padded up to the correct aspect ratio rather than cropped down.
