image upload not working

my image uploader appears to be working fine, but the images i upload are nothing but broken links, i don’t get any kind of error message but when i look into my ftp the file locations (…/uploads/2012/01) that is says the images are in, does not exist. here is what i’ve done so far:

1. using my FTP client, i checked all the permissions, they are all 775, i’ve changed them to 776 ann even 777 but that didn’t fix it

2. i’ve tried a different theme, same problem

3. i’ve deactivated and or deleted all plugins, no change

3. i have another wordpress installed on the same domain (www.fullpotentialphoto.com/portfolio) that one works perfectly, and i’ve verified that the permissions are the same on both content folders

4. went into my hosting cpanel and verified the permisssions, they are all at 775, i modified them to 776 and 777, that did not fix the issue

5. i manually created the /2012/01 directory to see if it would write the images to there, it did not.

what am i missing? what else can i try to get the images loaded?
