I’d like to know this too if anybody can help, the default thumbnail size is just too small and there’s no user configurable setting in Admin.
Thanks.
You can get a really good plugin which restores the old-style uploader from pre 2.0 versions.

That creates thumbnails of custom sizes, but it doesn’t give you the right code. It will shrink the image and add .thumbnail to the filename, but it will give you a <img> tag with the large file’s URL. You just need to add .thumbnail before the file extension.
basically a separate image is not created for thumbnailing. the horizontal and vertical widths are limited only. change the code accordingly and that should solve the problem.
how can you get the url for the uploaded image?
anyone else have any other suggestions? I looking for the same thing
You can change the core or just install the Sodelind image manager plugin.

if you are using the rich text editor, look for the HTML code. by default uploaded images are stored in http://site.com/wp-content/yyyy/mm/dd/image.jpg
I use the Iimage Browser plugin (yes, it is spelled correctly). It allows you to make a thumbnail of any size during the upload process; there are a lot of other options available as well. Check it out at:
