I am assuming we use featured image as the event photo. I uploaded an image 700×350 and it resized it automatically to 300×150

Is this the right place to upload the photo? or is there something else?

That is the correct spot. The sizes are typically set by your theme. They can be changed of course. You might need to reference the WP API/Codex on thumbnail sizes.

When the images are resized, they seem to lose their alt text attributes when listed on the main events page. How can I fix this?
