    Hi,

I love the potential of this plugin, but somehow can’t get it working 100%.

When I choose the non-agressive approach (“Show text over image” is unchecked), following happens:
    i) click on thumbnail, image opens within search results as normal in G’s new image search, not in a page layout with site menus etc.
ii) click on “View original image”, then blog page opens with the 500 x 500px image showing
iii) click on “View full-size image” (page title), the picture pops up in an overlay at full size (so this part is working).

When “Show text over image” is checked, following happens:
    i) click on thumbnail, image opens as normal then after a few seconds gets grayed out with “Click here” text
ii) click on that, then taken to the correct blog page
iii) but if click on “View original image”, then a full-size version of
the grayed out image with “Click here” text appears in a new window

I have amended the index.php file to counter the thickbox issue I was having with the endless loop, but not sure if the above problems are related to my blog settings. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

    Hi!

Thanks for your kind words about the plugin.

Just to go through your comments step by step:

    Non-agressive approach

    i) click on thumbnail, image opens within search results as normal in G’s new image search, not in a page layout with site menus etc.

This is normal. However, Google will not be able to hotlink the image full size, so it should show a bit blurred (Google will automaticall enlarge the thumbnail instead).

ii) click on “View original image”, then blog page opens with the 500 x 500px image showing

This is the intended functionality in the non-aggressive setting. You can use a hack found in another post on this forum if you prefer to redirect to the actual post (see warnings in that thread).

    In the aggressive mode:

    i) click on thumbnail, image opens within search results as normal in G’s new image search, not in a page layout with site menus etc.

Again, this is how it will have to work. The link from thumbnail to larger preview is set completely by Google and unless you happen to have a friend with root access to their servers, we won’t be able to change that bit 🙂

ii) click on that, then taken to the correct blog page (…) but if click on “View original image”, then a full-size version of the grayed out image with “Click here” text appears in a new window

Yup, that is why we recommend using a text to encourage clicks on the picture instead of the enlarge image.

The problem is that it is really very hard to distinguish between a direct visit and a hotlink. It will have the same user agent and referrer in both cases.

That’s why we have included both the redirect to post-style view and watermark in the same plugin, so that webmasters can choose, but to do both at the same time is a bit more complicated.

Thanks for the quick reply and the clear explanation – now understand better how it all works. So I’m using the non-agressive approach on my blog and know that if searcher clicks on “View original image” they at least see my blog with menus and links in the background, rather than the full size image on a blank page.
