image permissions in WP 3.05

I am using Slackware 13.1 Linux/GNU at home. Check local images and I get 644. Upload an image for a new post. Image arrives via CPanel with permissions of 600. Write a new post with that image. Image not found – error 404. Use CPanel to change permissions on the server – back to 644 and then all is well. This is a huge pain in the neck. Did not have this problem with WP 3.0.4
