Image Optimization – Remove Original Image Backups

    Hi,

    I am trying to understand how this works more precisely and the utility of removing original image backups.

    Let’s take as an example this image from my website -> http://prntscr.com/o5ns9l

    Basically, I see that image optimization created a .webp version and also a replacement of the original .jpg (while also saving a .bk.jpg) for each format size automatically created by WordPress upon uploading (ex: 100×100, 300×300, etc.).

    However, I notice that for the original-sized uploaded image (i.e. DSC_0117-1-min.jpg) there is no .bk.jpg created, but only a .webp version.

    Correct me wherever and whether I am wrong please:

    1) The original-sized uploaded image (i.e. DSC_0117-1-min.jpg) remains untouched and there is no .bk.jpg created, while ONLY the WordPress’s automatic standard sizes (100×100, 300×300, etc.) have bk.jpg versions.

    2) When choosing to Remove Original Image Backups, all .bk.jpg versions will be deleted, but the original-sized uploaded image (i.e. DSC_0117-1-min.jpg) remains untouched.

    3) Removing Original Image Backups will delete those .bk.jpg versions only from the server and nothing from the database.

    4) There is only one benefit from removing original backups, and that is just saving up some server disk usage.

    Hi,

    1. In certain case , if a image fail to optimize for any reason , it won’t have a “.bk.jpg” , and the image remains untouched.

    2. yes , it removes the file with name “.bk.jpg”

    3. yes , and I don’t think WP itself even knows the file was changed , LSCWP uses its own database table to store image-optimization-related-information

    @qtwrk, thank you for your answer. It’s clear now.

    However, I just want to mention that none of my uploaded original-sized images have a .bk.jpg created. Could it be because I only upload images that have already been optimized (thus LiteSpeed having nothing left to optimize)?

    Hi,

    Yes, one of the most common reason for failed optimization is that image is already optimized before LSCWP does it , so it will just skip it.
