    Hi

I am considering using this plugin to convert all my images from my site to webp. But I was wondering if the webp versions of the images will keep the image attributes that I once set for the old jpeg images like Alt Text and Title. Once all images are converted to webp, my intention is to delete these old images forever to free server space. Right now my site has 2700 images.

So, 1) will these attributes be preserved in this case? 2) Also keeping only the webp versions do you think this could affect google ranking negativily right after this change for a brief period of time? I dont know if google would treat them as new images that would need to rank again or would treat them as the same images even though the file extension is different.

Also I see that your plugin automatically optimizes the images. I dont need this to be done for jpeg images. 3) Is it possile to deactivate this? Or delete the optimized jpeg images if created? As I said I would like just to keep images as webp (these can be compressed and optimized). But I dont need any jpeg versions as fallback if an outdated browser doesnt support webp.

  • Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us and for considering our plugin for your image optimization needs! I’d be happy to clarify your questions.

    1. Image attributes (Alt Text and Title) – Yes, all image attributes such as Alt Text and Title will be preserved when converting your images to WebP. These attributes are stored in the WordPress database, not in the image files themselves, so the conversion process will not affect them.
    2. Deleting original JPEG/PNG files – We strongly advise against removing the original images. This isn’t directly related to Google rankings (as Google can handle WebP images well), but rather because of how ShortPixel works. The plugin creates WebP files alongside your original images and serves them only to browsers that support WebP. If you delete the original JPEG/PNG files, users with older browsers that don’t support WebP will encounter broken images. Moreover, removing these originals could also cause issues in your WordPress Media Library and database, as our plugin references the original files for management.
    3. Disabling automatic optimization – Yes, you can deactivate automatic optimization in the plugin settings. However, this toggle applies to all image types, not just JPEGs. So, if you turn it off, no images (including WebP) will be automatically optimized. While it is technically possible to delete JPEG/PNG images manually from the server, we don’t recommend this, as it would create conflicts and potentially result in blank images appearing in your Media Library.

If you want to primarily serve WebP images, we suggest keeping your original files as fallbacks while letting ShortPixel handle WebP delivery for supported browsers. This ensures full compatibility and avoids any potential issues.

Please let me know if you have more questions or need assistance with setting up your plugin – I’ll be happy to help!

    Hi

Thank you for your detailed response. So maybe this plugin is not what I am looking for. My goal is to replace all jpegs in my site with webp images and free server space.

I see you have anoter plugin called Enable Media Replace. But I would need to optimize images manually before uploading them, and then use that plugin to replace the current jpeg images to the new webp images. Is this correct? And is this plugin safe and wont cause issues in my WordPress Media Library and database?

    Hi charlieve02,

That’s correct, and no worries, our plugin is safe and shouldn’t cause any issues (although you should always have a backup of your site in place, no plugin is 100% bug-free).

    Best,
