Support » Theme: Twenty Nineteen » How to trigger the off-canvas menu?

  • Hi,

I want to create a custom button / link on the mobile version of my website which should trigger the same off-canvas menu that appears when the user clicks on the “…” round button which is usually displayed on the main menu only when it gets shortened.

I will probably disable the shortening which I find a bit confusing, and replace the whole menu with a single hamburger button which will trigger the off-canvas menu.

    Any advice?

Why do you want to create a new button instead of using what’s there already?

    Hello,

thanks for the reply, as I said, it is a bit confusing right now, I don’t have many links and having it shortened only for one or two links (and one of them is Contact which is very important for my customers and must visible) is not ideal.

I would rather replace the menu with a single button which opens the off-canvas menu, but still have not figured out how to do that.

    Thanks

I don’t understand your motive to replace over use what’s already there.

Try your best to re-use what the theme has already, especially if you’re not a developer. There is no point re-inventing the wheel with the CSS and JS involved in this.

    Andrew,

thanks for sharing your point of view.

I’m not a coder, you’re right. But I have worked the last 12 years as a web designer (html5, css), and think that how the menu has been designed is not very functional.

That’s my opinion of course, but I noticed I’m not the only one commenting about this feature, anyway:

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/avoid-menu-shortening-on-mobile-displays/

Still, I do like this theme a lot, because it is minimal and fast. That’s why I want to use it for my website and invest time in doing some tests. So any help with that will be appreciated 🙂

    Thanks

I’m not doubting your credentials and I am encouraging you to save time where you can. I have helped people create custom things on the forums many times and times have changed in my life, I cannot spend tens of hours doing those types of activities any more for people. I can also imagine others can’t do that too.

If this thread has no traction you have to consider hiring a professional to get this done. Try https://jobs.wordpress.net/ or https://jetpack.pro/ and do not accept any hire offers posted to these forums.

    Andrew,

I understand perfectly. I see you’re a volunteer and I’m not expecting you to solve my personal requests. My apologies if this thread made you think that.

Since this is a public support forum, I just wanted to see if someone else might have some advice for me about this technical question.

    Many thanks
