• Hello, I’m looking to create a directory site, similar to the YELP and Angie’s List models.

I’m wondering if you think WordPress can scale to be a site like this, if this were to take off?

And do you know any examples of large directory sites built on wordpress? And what theme they use? Thanks!

  • Could it be scaled ot do this? Easily. To be honest, unless you’re getting a huge amount of traffic a decent VPS or dedicated server will serve your needs the majority of the time. After that you’d look at pretty standard setups like load-balanced servers. By the stage that you need that you’d be best off looking for a hosting company that knows exactly what they are doing, or hiring someone in-house to look after it for you.

Hi thanks for your reply! I’m pretty happy with my hosting company and they are well suited for this. What they recommended I look into is the themes people use for large directories with wordpress, they said that would impact things based on how they processed date for the database.

How they work with data is rlatively important but is that really the biggest consideration when the theme doesn’t look like you want it to, or doesn’t do what you need it to?

I agree that there’s a lot of themes and plugins out there that could be coded better or just use resource-heavy processes, but the majority of the times there’s reasons for that.

There’s also a very good chance that a site that has that sort of use uses a theme that’s proprietary so was created specificlly for them and isn’t publicly available.
