How to make narchives.php work?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but how am I supposed to make the narchives.php hack work? I’ve tried creating a file called my-hacks.php and pasting the code there as explained in the wiki, but that wouldn’t work. I can’t find anything else about how to make a hack work. 🙁
