How to link to posts

I am trying to create an archive page for posts. I have constructed a template and can display posts. The problem is, they default to example.com/2013/07 instead of example.com/07/post or something similar.

The links lead to nowhere as of now, and I can’t seem to figure out the permalink structure required, or PHP call needed to just make the link direct to the post.
