how to define permalinks

    Hi

    I have read the guidance on how to use permalinks but I dont understand it. What is an apache server etc?? No idea what any of that means.

    I tried selecting month and name and then edited the box with:

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

    by entering in my postname so it becomes:

    /%year%/%monthnum%/secret-to-happiness/

    I thought this had worked but when I go to my blog and then click on the post it is just getting stuck on the archive listing of all the posts uinder the same category. I notice it is automatically naming all posts as the same post name and if I click on any one of them it goes to the same archive listing page. See:

    I want to set it up so that each post is named with its post name at the end of the permalink.

    I was reading the pretty permalinks section of the guidance but it says something about having to install all sorts of plugins etc which has completely lost me. And I dont know what an apache server is and how to check if I am on one.

    What do I do? In plain english…? I am new to wordpress and blogging in general :s

    first its important to know if you are on apache (linux) vs, IIS (windows)

    that’s something you find out through your host

    You’re trying to make it too complicated. 🙂

    At Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel, select “Month and name” under “Common settings,” leave everything under “Optional” blank, and click the “Save Changes” button. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

    That’s all you need to do.

    Oh I seem to have figured it out now!

    I have realised that when you select custom structure under the permalinks settings then you dont add any specific post name

    So I selected

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

    and left it like that

    and then under each post there is an option to edit the permalink and just enter the itself which has then automatically been added to the permalink when the post is published

    now each posting is showing a URL ending with the actual year, month and post name, which is what I wanted 🙂
