No, the parent theme has to be installed but you can only have one theme at a time active on a site . And the child theme is separate in that sense from the parent. So you just need to create the style.css file (on your local computer using a plain text editor) and then use FTP to create the new directory for the child theme inside “themes” folder (not inside the parent theme) – then put the style.css inside the child theme folder. Then go to your dashboard and you should see the child theme – click on activate.

Yes, but you will then upload those to your site using FTP.
