WordPress 7.1 brings client-side media handling. How does this affect EWWW Image Optimizer usage and settings?

    Hey,

Shane and I have been doing a bunch of tests on this. We haven’t seen any serious effects and have addressed any of the small things we have noticed. We’re also adding an option to just disable the client-side media handling outright in case there are any side effects we didn’t see.

    Sorry, one more question.

Client-side optimisation uses libvips, which is supposedly faster and better (and more secure?) than iMagick. My hosting provider supports it.

Are you guys planning to switch to libvips on the server too to match these benefits?

Though it does seem like it’s possible for plugins to use it (there’s a conversation about that on the official post) but there doesn’t seem to be many out there that do (we could only find one). There are some additional reasons not to, such as that it uses FFI which isn’t as secure apparently and can slow down execution (https://www.php.net/manual/en/book.ffi.php). There is also a question of how many hosts actually have it. So, for now, no we aren’t currently planning on implementing it.
