So I just got a message from a client letting me know my website was down. All it says is “There has been a critical error on this website.” No details, no way to know why there’s a critical error–just that there is one. I can still login to the dashboard and do things so I’m assuming it’s not the wordpress install itself. Upon entering the dashboard I had two updates to make–one to WordPress itself (to move to the latest version), and one to Akismet (which is deactivated because I’m still debating on paying for it). So since I wasn’t at the current version of WordPress (but I did update it to see if that would help, and it didn’t), I’m going to also go out on a limb and assume that the latest version isn’t the issue either. It honestly feels like this came out of left field because the website was working fine within the last 24hrs based on Jetpack data. So now I really feel like I need actual information to fix this, but I don’t know how to get information. I’m not a developer at all, that’s way outside my skillset. The best I can do is some HTML and CSS. However I’m pretty good at follow instructions and googling to fix things, if I know what it is I’m looking for.

The reason for the error should be visible in the error log. You can find it in your hosting area. If necessary, the support of your hosting can help you.

Alternatively, you could also enable debugging in WordPress. How to do this is described here: https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/ – also here the support of your hosting can help you if necessary to edit the file accordingly.

In both cases you should be able to see what the cause is in the logfile.

Thank you for the help! Got my error logs and it turns out the problem was the Gutenberg plugin.
