Hi there, to get your API ke you need to register for aan account with wordpress.com
http://wordpress.com/
You don’t need to get another blog, but once you have your free account,
your key will be in your profile.
hope this helps.
mike.
Mikey, would a key that I got for a different account work with the WordPress account I’ve already built? It surprises me that the key would transfer. I’ve already signed up on WordPress with the name I want to use for the site, and hate to give that up.
Otto42, I went to the page from your link. That’s just the regular sign in page to get into my blog. I use that every day, of course, but there is nothing that looks like an API Key there, just a place to enter my username ans password, a “remember me” checkbox, a log in button, and these two links: Get a free WordPress account | Lost your password?
I’m using Firefox on a Mac. Is it possible the key is not displaying? What would it look like–that is, should it be a number, word, or what?
You need to sign in for the page to display, obviously.
Once signed in, THAT page displays your key very prominently.
Your WordPress.com API key is: 1234567890. Don’t share your API key, it’s like a password.
Yes, of course I signed in. But see my original post—once signed in, my dashboard does NOT display such a number. While signed in, I went to my profile page, and saw no number. And so on. Something is obviously amiss with my account, as apparently everyone else is seeing a number once signed in. That was my original assertion.
But thanks for the number.
Actually, I solved my problem by ditching Akismet and using a plugin that doesn’t need an API Key. Simple is often better in the long run.
While signed in, I went to my profile page, and saw no number.
While signed into your own blog, yes, there will be no number.
But if you’d sign in to wordpress.com and go to the link I gave you, then you’d see the number.
Simple, really. You have to go to wordpress.com, not to your own blog.
