• Hello,

I have seen lots of questions about backing up, but none that solve my exact problem, so here goes.

I am currently running my site on Ultrahost. However, for some time now, I have been unable to log into Cpanel. I enter the correct password and it says it’s wrong. For a while, they were helping me, trying to reset the password or whatever, but when that didn’t work, I stopped hearing from their support altogether, and in fact haven’t heard from them in over 2 months, despite still having an open support ticket.

For a while I was able to access via FTP, but now even that has stopped working, and I can’t get in to reset the password. I am having no issues logging into wp-admin to create my posts and things though.

However, my hosting period with Ultrahost is up in two months, and due to their poor customer service and my inability to access cpanel, I have decided to move hosts as soon as I can. I will need to acquire a full backup of all files and database in order to correctly restore my site on a new host.

That said, I need a way to access the entire thing without access to CPanel or FTP, such as something I can do from within WordPress itself.

Please do not tell me to contact Ultrahost support. I have already done so regarding this matter and gotten no response back at all. Now I need to find another alternative quickly or risk losing my entire site.

Any and all advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

  • There are several plugins that you can use to backup your site. Have you tried any of those?

There are two problems with that.

    1. Most of the plugins I have found only backup the database. They don’t say anything about being able to back up the entire installation.

    2. Most of the plugins I have found have either not been updated in over a year or are written by users with badly broken English, so that I cannot understand how they are meant to be used. Nonetheless, all of the ones I have found so far say they are untested on my version. The latest ones I’ve seen go up to WP3.9.

If you know of a reliable one that can back up the entire installation, is written in clean, readable English, and works with the latest version of WordPress, I’d be happy to take suggestions.

Why dont you CALL Ultrahost and get help there. Emails and support tickets are too easy to ignore as you have been experiencing. You are paying for a service which they are not properly supporting.

Check out managewp.com, I have used that for migrating sites, but they also have the option for backup. You need to add a plugin to your site to make it work, but it does work. You wont need FTP to do that.

You could use that to migrate to a good host.

Thanks. I will try looking at that site. I’ll also see if calling makes any more difference, although considering they’ve gone 2 months without responding to email, that is still unacceptable. That is still part of providing good support. I am investigating other possible hosts. I’ll see what ManageWP can do too. Thanks.

Some of the plugins do a great job. For example, Duplicator will pull down the entire site and db, and facilitate moving it elsewhere. It’s not the only one though. No harm in even trying a couple to compare how they do.

FYI, Migrating with MANAGEWP.COM is much easier than using duplicator I have done that. The easiest way I have found with MANAGEWP is to setup a fresh WP install on the new host (make no changes except the required plugin) and Migrate the site. It works perfectly including the Database and only takes about 15 minutes. Your site is virtually identical to the old one. When looking for a host, find one with CPanel that offers cloning and backup options. Godaddy is great (I don’t work for them, but have been extremely happy with their products and especially their support)
