I’m totally 100% new to WordPress. I have some files that I list in my “Pages”. I want to be able to EDIT the files. (Right now I have to delete the file and upload an updated one from my local PC.)

Somewhere I saw that you should be able to your ‘admin’ menu, then click “Manage”, and then click “Files”. Well, I click “Manage”, and I get options to manage Posts, Pages, Uploads, Categories, Comments, Awaiting Moderation, Import, Export, Referers, and Subscriptions – …. but not FILES…

So how can I edit files?

    Thanks

    Rob

  • Hmmmm.strange – my WP 2.0.5 has this under “Manage”
    # Posts
    # Pages
    # Categories
    # Comments
    # Awaiting Moderation (0)
    # Files
    etc.

Thanks for replying Samboll … even though I didn’t get a solution, you at least confirmed that indeed that’s what I *should* see. Also, you prodded me to wonder whether it’s a WordPress version issue. (I don’t THINK it is, although I am having a hard time figuring out exactly what version my host is providing. They seem to be fairly up-to-date and state-of-the-art, so I would think it’s the latest version.)

Thanks again Samboll … still open to suggestions from anyone

Don’t bother with those online editing gizmos… You will have to open your FTP anyway, at least twice:
    – before editing them to make them writable
    – after you are done to secure your files = changing again the permissions

Of course, we often forget the second step and then all kind of hackers will be happy to screw up our blog. Thus, I’d recommend, just edit the files on your computer and upload them.

I am having a hard time figuring out exactly what version my host is providing.

While logged into your WordPress Admin go to: Dashboard. Down the bottom you’ll see what version you’re running.

    Thanks moshu ..

2 issues / questions with what you said

    1. I can’t seem to connect with FTP. Should I generally be able to view my root directory, or should I FTP to a default directory of some sort? (Could this vary by installation?)

    2. I understand what you’re sating about edit locally & upload, but this is a file that I would want to update daily for at least a short period of time, so if I could edit it instead, it would be so much more convenient.

(Related point – I wonder if I don’t get a “File” option under my Admin panel simply because I have no files there that I have permission to Edit … ?)

    Thanks all

Thanks Katgirl !! I looked – the version appears to be ‘wordpress-mu-1.0’

Still not sure if it should give me a “File” option, but at least I know.

(Sorry for all the questions … I’m a total newbie at this. I’m using it as an ‘edublog’ – I’m a college instructor and this is a great way to provide files & info to students, post announcements etc. I’ve dug through the forum posts and documentation, but I really couldn’t find what I was looking for. If I should be over in the ‘sandbox’ somewhere asking this, please let me know.)

for further questions, please, go to

Do you have a free hosted blog? (we don’t support those!)

    (@robcashin)

Ah .. yes, it IS a free hosted blog. So mu.wordpress.org/forums … the same would go for there? No support for free hosted blogs?

We would have saved a lot of time and bandwidth… if you gave a link to your blog. By the URI we usually are able to say where should you go for support 🙂

Well, bandwidth’s pretty cheap 🙂 But I know your time is not. That’s why I asked if there is somewhere else I should go for these questions.

    My blog: http://robcashin.edublogs.org/

If this forum is not where I should be, please let me know. Thanks for your help and your time in the meantime …

    Rob

Wow – that’s 2 days in a row I’ve gone down this road…note to self – ask questions.

No, this forum is not for edublogs.
That’s the site where you should seek help.
They use a “cousin” of WordPress (the MultiUser version = mu) and they are entirely responsible of everything what is going on at that site.
You have a blog with them – they are the ones who should support you (and all the blogs hosted by them).

At the very top of their website there is a link to their forum:
    http://www.edublogs.org/

Thanks moshu … and everyone else. Meanwhile, I should point out I followed the link to ‘wordpress.org…’ from the Dashboard of my edublogs account; furthermore, that link was contained within a section entitled “Welcome to WordPress MU”

I think it’s confusing at best, and misleading at worst, for them to direct users to this forum from there – wouldn’t you agree?

Sincere thanks, and sorry if I wasted anyone’s time.

    R

It is both confusing and misleading. We here on this forum are not really able to do much about that – all we can do is send people in the right direction when we discover they were sent here in error.

Those of you who have got sucked into the edublogs thing should maybe start agitating with them to get things squared away….

    1. The developers of MU should NOT leave a link pointing toward this forum in their script!
    2. Every normal (read: responsible) user of MU that has mass-blogs… should change that freaking link to pint toward their own support forum.

[Please, feel free to send thousands of email to your edublogs host pointing them to this post!]
