Various plugins use shortcodes, especially contact form plugins, photo galleries and the like.

There is the BBCode Plugin if you’d like to try it out as well.

May be you mean short phrase which will be replaced to link or image in your posts , if so you can use Shortcat Manager of Universal Post Manager plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/universal-post-manager/screenshots/
